Rheophila rasboras are a small group of stream-dwelling rasboras that live in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated rivers in Southeast Asia, especially Borneo and parts of Indonesia/Malaysia.

The name “rheophila” literally means “flow-loving”, which perfectly describes their habitat.

Key Characteristics

  • Size: Very small (about 2–4 cm / under 1.5 inches)
  • Body shape: Slim and streamlined for swimming against current
  • Coloration: Often subtle—silvers, browns, yellows—with some species showing faint stripes or spots
  • Behavior: Active, peaceful schooling fish

Natural Habitat

Rheophila rasboras are found in:

  • Clear, shallow forest streams
  • Strong current
  • Rocky or sandy bottoms
  • Leaf litter and submerged roots
  • Cooler, oxygen-rich water compared to typical rasbora habitats

Aquarium Care

These fish are not beginner-level due to their specialized needs.

Tank Setup

  • Tank size: 15–20 gallons minimum (long tanks preferred)
  • Flow: Strong current (powerheads or river manifold recommended)
  • Filtration: High oxygenation
  • Substrate: Sand, smooth rocks, driftwood
  • Plants: Limited—use hardy species like Anubias or Bucephalandra

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 20–24°C (68–75°F)
  • pH: 6.0–7.0
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately soft
  • Water quality: Extremely clean—very sensitive to pollution

Diet

  • Micropredators and insectivores
  • Feed:
    • Live or frozen foods (daphnia, cyclops, baby brine shrimp)
    • High-quality micro pellets
  • Frequent small feedings work best

Behavior & Tankmates

  • Peaceful shoaling fish (keep in groups of 6–10+)
  • Best with other rheophilic species, such as:
    • Hillstream loaches
    • Small gobies
    • Stream-adapted minnows

Common Species Examples

  • Rasbora rheophila
  • Rasbora zosterophora
  • Rasbora vaillantii (sometimes grouped with rheophilic forms)

If you’d like, I can:

  • Recommend specific rheophila rasbora species
  • Help design a river-style aquarium
  • Compare them with hillstream loaches or danios
